About TELMA History

TELMA is Technology Communication Research

Telecommunication Engineering constitutes a fundamental pillar of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the Knowledge Society. Telecommunication engineering enhances our personal and professional lives acting as a catalyst for progress, bringing people closer together, bridging gaps, and fostering global interconnectivity in an increasingly interconnected world. Research in the field of Telecommunications Engineering, therefore, has become in recent decades one of the axes on which the socioeconomic development has been sustained.

TELMA Milestones

1988

In this year, the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de Telecomunicación (ETSIT) was created at the University of Malaga. In its more than three decades of activity, the ETSIT pioneered research in telecommunications in Andalusia, having trained a large number of researchers through its PhD Program, many of them internationally well-known prestigious researchers nowadays, and has established itself as a national and European benchmark in in telecommunications engineering research. This fact has resulted in recent years in a notable improvement of indicators such as the number of high impact scientific publications, conference presentations, public funded research projects, participation in European Projects and Networks of Excellence and contracts with private companies. Currently, the ETSIT of Malaga is considered one of the most prestigious centers in the country, having demonstrated its excellent professional training degrees in both the national and international markets.

1992

Another relevant milestone took place with the inauguration, in 1992, of the Andalusia Technology Park (PTA) in Malaga. Today, the Malaga Tech Park enjoys a well-deserved international prestige, being recognized as one of the most successful technology parks in the world and being considered a role model, having received numerous awards. It is worthy to emphasize the intense relationship between the ETSIT and the corporate universe of the Malaga Tech Park, located only a few kilometers away. This relationship has facilitated the interexchange between teaching, research, development and innovation.

1993

The Andalusian Institute of Millimeter Waves was created on April 19, 1993 by agreement between the Junta de Andalucía, the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía and the Universidad de Málaga. The staff of the Instituto Andaluz de Ondas Milimétricas was composed of the members of the research group TIC-102 'Ingeniería de Comunicaciones' of the Junta de Andalucía.

1997

In February, the representatives of the research groups TIC-102 'Communication Engineering' and TIC-125 'Integrated Systems Engineering' requested the extension of the design of the Institute of Millimeter Waves, justified by the significant increase in research activity in the field of Telecommunications at the University of Malaga and the need to enhance collaboration between researchers with common interests.

2011-2013

The proposal for transforming the Millimeter Wave Institute into the Telecommunications Research Institute was taken up. The group of researchers interested in an Institute of these characteristics grew over time and, in those years, there were already three PAIDI groups of the Junta de Andalucía promoting this transformation (the two research groups mentioned above were joined by the TIC-171 'Advanced Interface Design' group).

2019

Finally, in February 2019, the Report of the ‘Telecommunications Research Institute of the Universidad de Malaga’ is presented. The external evaluation requested by the Research Commission of the University of Malaga resulted in an excellent score. The application was approved by the Governing Council of the University of Malaga on May 28, 2019 and, subsequently, in its July 2019 session, by the Social Council.

2020

After the public information process, the Directorate of Evaluation and Accreditation of the Andalusian Knowledge Agency (DEVA-AAC), authorized the creation of the Telecommunication Research Institute of the University of Malaga (TELMA) by Decree 98/2020, July 14; BOJA no. 137, July 17, 2020.

2021

Professor Carlos Camacho Peñalosa was elected as the first official Head of TELMA.
