The general objective of the Telecommunication Research Institute (TELMA) of the University of Malaga is to create a research, training and technological transfer environment with international projection. TELMA acts as a catalyst for the collaboration among its award-winning members and aims to attract researchers of recognized trajectory in the field of telecommunications. To this end, some of the specific objectives are described below.

To carry out research in telecommunications engineering oriented to the business world, both at the local and global levels. The idea is to highlight the knowledge and experience of the Institute members by focusing the Institute activities on the market needs. It is considered especially relevant to achieve an adequate balance between fundamental and applied research, as well as between public funded research (competitive and non-competitive) and corporate funded research through contracts with companies and other institutions.

The development of a technological innovation strategy applicable to the concept of knowledge society. That is, to define the technological trends and areas in which it is profitable to invest.

To spread the strategy of collaborative work with the industry that allows us the technological anticipation essential for a continuous flow of transfer in the areas of interest of our partner companies.

The creation of a business fabric with very high added value by creating 'spin-offs' through the commercial application of the generated knowledge.

The development of a training strategy aimed at postgraduates and professionals.

Internationalization of the Institute through participation in international projects and the exchange of researchers.

Promotion of the innovation culture as a fundamental tool for an effective transfer of knowledge from the academic world to the productive sector.
